Sequence of Tenses Part III
日本語は大まかな状況を説明しているだけで詳細な訳ではありません。
時制の一致 パート Iでは主節が過去の場合の４つの場面を見てきました。ここでは主節が現在の場合です。ルールは主節が過去の場合と並行し、それぞれのサブセクション１から４で説明されています。主節が過去の場合、シックリ来ない面が幾つかありますが主節が現在の場合は日本語のルールとほぼ一緒ですので分かりやすいです。
1. To show concurrent/same-time action/state, use the simple present or present continuous tense.
主節の時間帯と同じ時間の出来事は現在形か現在進行形で表す。
I know (that) he lives in Boston.
私は彼がボストンに住んでいる事を知っている。
He is angry because the car doesn’t start.
車のエンジンがかからないので彼は怒ってます。
She is not happy because it is raining outside.
外は雨なので彼女は不満です。
He thinks (that) children should go to bed before 9pm.
子供は9時前には寝るべきだと彼は思う。
The wife wants to confront the husband if the story is true.
奥さんは旦那さんの話が本当なのか突きつけたいと思っている。
The child waits patiently while her mother talks to her friend.
お母さんが友達と話している間子供はじっと辛抱強く待っている。
2. To show prior action/state, use the simple past or past continuous tense.
主節の時間帯より以前の出来事は過去形あるいは過去進行形で表す。
I know (that) he lived in Boston.
彼がボストンに住んでいた事をしっている。
He feels good because he finished the test this morning.
今朝テストが終わったのでいい気持ちです。
She can see clearly now because her husband gave her new glasses as a birthday present.
旦那さんが誕生プレゼントに眼鏡をあげたので今ははっきりと見えるようになった。
She wants to ask him when and where he was born.
彼女は彼がいつどこで生まれたのかを彼に聞きたい。
He is curious where the couple met for the first time.
彼はカップルがどこで最初に会ったのかに興味がある。
My parents understand resons why the couple didn’t come to their wedding.
わたしの両親はカップルが自分たちの結婚式に来なかった理由を知っている。
3. To show future action/state, use the simple future or future continuous tense.
主節の時間帯より未来の出来事は未来形あるいは未来進行形で表す。
I know (that) he will live in Boston.
私は彼がボストンに住むに違いない事を知っている。
I can tell her that you will be calling her.
貴方が彼女に電話すると彼女に伝えられます。
Are you satisfied that someone will be contacting you tomorrow?
明日誰かが貴方に連絡する事に満足ですか？
Please wait here because he will be back soon.
彼はやがて来ますのでここで待っててください。
I am interested to see if she will call me or not.
彼女が私に電話するかどうか興味があります。
I am happy because the contract will be finalized next week.
私は契約が来週完結するので嬉しいです。
4. To show something continues to the present time, use the present perfect continuous.
何かが現在まで継続する場合は現在完了進行形で表します。
I know (that) he has been living in Boston.
私は彼がずっとボストンに住んでいる事を知ってます。
She talks as if her boyfriend has been cheating on her.
彼女はボーイフレンドがあたかもずっと浮気しているかのように話す。
You shouldn’t be nervous if you have been studying for the test.
テストの為ずっと勉強しているんであれば神経質になる必要はない。
Do you know (that) she has been trying to talk to you for the last couple of days?
彼女が2～3日間貴方と話ししようとしている事を知ってますか？
He is depressed because it has been raining since yesterday afternoon.
昨日の午後からずっと雨なので彼は憂うつである。
Your success depends on whether you have been preparing for it or not.
貴方の成功は今までその為に準備して来たかどうかにかかっている 。
