Reported Speech Part III
ここでは話法 (Reported Speech) における過去進行形の変換例を幾つか見ていきます。時制変換ルールは下記のようになっていてcan/will がcould/wouldになる事も示されてます。
時制変換ルール：直接話法の内容を間接話法で伝える場合、過去進行形は過去完了進行形に can は could に will は would に変換します。
直接話法 (Direct Speech) 間接話法 (Reported Speech)
1. Reported clause in the past continuous tense, shift to the past perfect continuous tense:
He said, “It was raining yesterday”
He said (that) it had been raining the previous day.
He said, “I was walking along the road toward the intersection.”
He said (that) he had been walking along the road toward the intersection.
She said, “I was wondering what to do”
She said (that) she had been wondering what to do.
She said, “Your mother was looking for you.”
She said (that) my mother had been looking for me.
He asked me, “Were you watching TV when I called?”
He asked me if I had been watching TV when he had called.
She asked me, “What were you doing last night?”
She asked me what I had been doing the previous night.
2. Change “can” to “could”:
“can” は “could”に変換：
She said, “I can’t swim.”
She said (that) she couldn’t swim.
He asked me, “Can you give me a ride to work tomorrow?”
He asked me if I could give him a ride to work the following day.
She said, “These trees can reach thirty feet by the next summer”
She said (that) those trees could reach thirty feet by the following summer.
He said, “If you are really desperate, I can lend you the money.”
He said (that) if I was really desperate, he could lend me the money.
She asked, “Do you think your friend can take us to the airport tomorrow morning?”
She asked if I thought my friend could take us to the airport the following morning.
He said, “I can watch your children until your wife comes home.”
He said (that) he could watch my children until my wife came home.
3. Change “will” to “would”:
“will” は “would” に変換：
She said, “I will pick you up at six o’clock next to the bus station.”
She said (that) she would pick me up at six o’clock next to the bus station.
They said, “We will see you at the restaurant after the movie is over.”
They said (that) they would see me at the restaurant after the movie was over.
He asked, “Will you lend me some money till tomorrow?“
He asked if I would lend him some money till the following day.
She said, “I will tell you about it tomorrow.”
She said (that) she would tell me about it the following day.
He said, “My friend will be here to meet you tomorrow morning.”
He said that his friend would be there to meet me the following morning.
She said, “I will introduce you to my mother when you come to my birthday.”
She said (that) she would introduce me to her mother when I came to her birthday.
