Reported Speech Part I
日本語は大まかな状況を説明しているだけで詳細な訳ではありません。
ここでは話法(Reported Speech)における現在と現在進行形の時制の変換例を幾つか見ていきます。時制変換ルールは下記に示されているように現在形は過去形に、現在進行形は過去進行形に変換します。しかし歴史的出来事や不変の真理はルールの例外です。
時制変換ルール：直接話法の内容を間接話法で伝える場合現在形は過去形に、現在進行形は過去進行形に変換します。

現在進行形 ⟹ 過去進行形
1. Reported clause in the present tense, shift to the past
現在形は過去形にする。
My friend said, “How are you?”
My friend asked how I was.
私の友達は元気ですかと私に聞いた。
He said, “What is your problem?”
He asked what my problem was.
彼は（私に）貴方の問題（気に食わない事）はなんですかと聞いた。
She said, “Leila wants to come with us”
She said (that) Leila wanted to come with us.
彼女はレイラさんが私たちと一緒に来たいそうですと言った。
She said, “I have a big car.”
She said (that) she had a big car.
私は大きな車に乗ってます（を持っている）と彼女は言った。
He said, “Everybody is at JUSCO.”
He said (that) everybody was at JUSCO.
皆ジャスコに居るよと彼は言った。
He replied, “I don’t know anything about it”
He replied (that) he didn’t know anything about it.
私は何も知りませんと彼は答えた。
2. Reported clause in the present continuous tense, shift to the past continuous tense.
現在進行形は過去進行形にする。
He said, “I am having dinner with my parents tonight”
He said (that) he was having dinner with his parents that night.
今夜両親とディナーする事になってますと彼は言った。
She said, “It’s raining here.”
She said (that) it was raining there.
ここは雨が降っていると彼女は言った。
She asked, “Where are you going?”
She asked me where I was going.
何処に行くのと彼女は私に聞いた。
My friend asked, “Is your brother coming with us?”
My friend asked me if my brother was coming with us.
貴方の兄/弟も我々と一緒に来るのと私の友達は私に聞いた。
He told us, “My wife and I are going to the church tomorrow morning.”
He told us (that) he and his wife were going to the church the following morning.
明日の朝奥さんと一緒に教会に行きますと彼は我々に言った。
She stated, “The plants are doing well after the rain.”
She said (that) the plants were doing well after the rain.
雨の後草木は元気だよと彼女は言った。
3. Exception: when the reported clause expresses a general truth, do not shift.
例外：伝達節が一般的真理の場合はシフトしない。
She said, “The capital city of Japan is Tokyo”
She said (that) the capital city of Japan is Tokyo.
日本の首都は東京だと彼女は言った。
The teacher said, “Elephants have a good memory”
The teacher said (that) elephants have a good memory.
像は記憶力が良いと先生は言った。
The teacher said, “Light travels faster than sound”
The teacher said (that) light travels faster than sound.
光は音より早いと先生は言った。
The teacher said, “The earth revolves around the sun”
The teacher said (that) the earth revolves around the sun.
地球は太陽の周りを回ると先生は言った。
The man said, “Two times two is four, so please give me four dollars.”
The man said (that) two times two is four, so please give him four dollars.
２ｘ２は４だから4ドル私に下さいと男性は言った。
The documentary said, “HIV/AIDs cases are on the rise.”
The documentary said (that) HIV/AIDs cases are on the rise.
ドキュメンタリーでHIV/AIDS ケースが拡大していると言っていた。
