定冠詞

日本語は大まかな状況を説明しているだけで詳細な訳ではありません 。

定冠詞は名詞の前に付随し、聞き手がどの名詞かはっきりと分かる時に使われます。名詞が限定されていれば数えられる名詞、数えられない名詞に関係なく共に定冠詞が先行します。幾つかの用法を2つ(Part I and Part II)に分けてまとめてありここではPart Iを見て行きます。

1. There is only one because it is unique:
ユニークでこの世に1つしか存在しない:

It is beyond human comprehension to understand the intricacies of the universe.
宇宙の複雑さは人類の理解力を遥かに超えている。

The earth goes around the sun.
地球は太陽のまわりを回る。

I studied the theory of relativity while in college.
私は大学で相対性理論を勉強した。

My son will be speaking at the 2020 high school graduation ceremony.
私の息子は2020年の高校卒業式でスピーチする事になってます。

I saw a huge flash of light in the sky.
私は空に大きな光のフラッシュを見た。

The 59th US presidential election will be held in November 2020.
第59回アメリカ大統領選挙は2020年の11月に行われます。

2. There is only one because of superlative or ordinal in position:
比較の最上級あるいは序数の為どの名詞なのかがはっきりしている:

This is the tallest building in our town.
これが私たちの町で一番高い建物です。

He is the youngest child in the family.
彼は家族の末っ子です。

She called me the next day.
彼女は次の日に私に電話してきた。

You are expected to memorize the following rules.
貴方は次のルールを暗記する事になってます。

The sixteenth day of July is my birthday.
7月16日は私の誕生日です。

He was named the best player of the year.
彼はその年の最優秀プレーヤーとなった。

3. There is only one in that context:
状況からはっきりしている:

Mother is cooking in the kitchen.  (only kitchen in the house)
母はキッチンで料理してます。

They go to the church every Sunday.  (only church in town)
彼らは毎週日曜日にその教会に行きます。

We live just next to the police station.  (one police station in town)
私たちは警察署のすぐ側に住んでます。

There will be a dance party at the community center tonight.  (one community center in town)
今夜コミュニティセンターでダンスパーティーがあります。

Where is the bathroom?  (one bathroom in the house)
トイレはどこですか?

My other car is stored in the garage.  (one garage in the house)
私のもう一台の車はガレージで保管してます。

4. Specific because of previous mention:
一度登場している為どの名詞なのかがはっきりしている:

I ate an apple for breakfast.  The apple was delicious.
朝リンゴを食べた。(そのリンゴは)美味しかったです。

I saw a dog on my way to school.  The dog belongs to my neighbor.
学校に行く時犬を見た。その犬は隣の犬です。

There is a book on the table.  I bought the book yesterday.
テーブルの上に本があります。私は昨日その本を買いました。

My neighbor has a cat.  The cat is very friendly.
隣人は猫をかってます。(その猫ちゃんは)とても人懐っこいです。

She bought a brand-new car.  The car is blue and comes with many gadgets.
彼女は新車を買いました。色はブルーでいろんな付属品がついてます。

I borrowed a novel from my friend.  I read the novel when I go to bed.
私は友達から小説をかりました。寝るとき読んでます。
