Could

Spread the love

Modal Verb Could

(Present or Future Meaning) : could + main verb
1. 可能性(Possibility)
(Unreal)
(Polite Request)

(Past Meaning):could have + past participle
(Possibility)
(Impossibility)
(Unreal)
7. 能力(Ability)

(Possibility):

I could be wrong, but I think he will win the election.

Aren’t you going to answer the phone?  It could be an important call.

(Unreal):
If+過去形、~would/could/should/might~ の文型で現在や未来の場面で使われます。

If he could start all over again, he would try to become a doctor.

If she couldn’t help you, she would tell you.

(Polite Request):

Could I have something to drink?

Couldn’t he come with us?

Could I have your attention, please?

Could you help me?

Could you speak more slowly?

Could you open the window?

(Past Possibility):
他の過去形の助動詞 should, would, might もcouldと同様現在と過去の場面があり過去の場面では(couldと同様)should have + 過去分詞、would have + 過去分詞、might have +過去分詞 となります。

Why didn’t you ask him?  He could have answered your question.

(Past Impossibility):

(Past Unreal):

If we had had a rope we could have saved him.
