Modal Verb Can
日本語は大まかな状況を説明しているだけで詳細な訳ではありません
我々日本人にとって法助動詞canは結構なじみある単語で主に次のような場面で使われます。
現在・未来の意味：
1．能力（Ability）
2．可能性（Possibility）
3．不可能（Impossibility）
4．許可（Permission）
過去の意味：
5．許可（Impossibility）
ここでは現在・未来の意味での能力から見て行きます。
1. 能力（Ability）:
この用法、～が出来る、は殆どの方がご存知でしょう。
He can run 100m in 12 seconds.
100m を12秒で走ることができる。
He can climb that wall in less than a minute.
彼はあの壁を一分以内に上る事ができます。
Nicole can drive, but she doesn’t have a license.
運転できるが免許がない。
My children can speak both Japanese and English fluently.
私の子供たちは日本語と英語を流暢に話す事ができます。
The box looks heavy. Do you think you can lift this box?
この箱は重そうだ。持てるか（自分に持てると思いますか）？
After 3 months of training, he can now fly a small airplane.
3ヶ月のトレーニングの後、今彼は小型機が飛ばす事が出来る。
2. 可能性（Possibility）:
次は可能性の場面です。
Even expert drivers can make mistakes.
エキスパートドライバーでさえ間違いを起こす。
（起こす可能性がある）
The plane went down in flames. Can the pilot still be alive?
炎を上げて墜落した。パイロットはまだ生きているだろうか？
（生きている可能性があるだろうか）
Daniel talks all the time. He can be really irritating.
しょっちゅう喋っている。ほんとにイライラする時がある。
（人をイライラさせる可能性がおおいにある）
I can come and see you tomorrow.
明日、会いに行けるよ。
（会いに行く（来る）事が可能である）
I can’t see you on Friday, but I can meet you on Saturday morning.
金曜日には会えないが土曜日の朝だったらだいじょうぶ。
（会うことが出来る、会える可能性が十分ある）
Accidents can happen when you are least expecting them.
事故はまったく予期してない時に起きたりする。
（起きる可能性がある）
3. 不可能（Impossibility）：
次は “～であるはずがない、そんなはずはない” の場面です。 Can’t は cannot の短縮形で口語的です。
It’s 3 am. He can’t still be working at this hour.
3時だよ。彼がまだ仕事しているはずがない。
Look, the price tag says $20.
It can’t cost more than a dollar or two in other stores.
見て、20ドルだよ。他の店では１～２ドル以上するはずがない。
You can’t be 35. I thought you were around 18 or so.
まさか35じゃないでしょう（信じられない）。18くらいかと思った。
He can’t be sick. I was just talking to him a minute ago and he was just fine.
彼が病気のはずがない。一分くらい前に話ししたけど元気だったよ。
You can’t go home now. The party is just starting.
まさか帰るんじゃないだろうな。パーティは始まったばかりだよ。
You can’t be hungry. You just ate five minutes ago.
まさか腹へってるんじゃないだろうな。5分前に食べたばかりじゃない。
“まさかでしょう” みたいな感触ですね。例えば you can’t be serious! は”まさか本気じゃないだろうな” 、”信じられない” みたいなニュアンスです。
4. 許可（Permission）：
次は許可の場面です。
I have two cars. You can use my other car tomorrow.
車2台もってます。明日私の車を使ってもいいですよ。
It’s getting too late. He can stay with us tonight.
遅くなってきた。（彼は）家で泊まってもいいですよ。
We are going to the football game tomorrow.
You can ride with us if you like.
フットボールゲームに明日行く予定です。
一緒に（車で）来てもかまいませんよ。
No one seems to be interested in the book. Can I take it home?
誰もこの本に興味なさそうです。家に持ち帰っていいですか？
I forgot my bag. Can I borrow your pen?
バッグを忘れた。ペンを貸してくれませんか？
I have to go right now. Can I call you tomorrow evening?
もう行かなければ（今行かなければならない）。
明日の晩電話してよろしいですか？
5. 過去の許可（Impossibility）:
次は過去の意味での不可能（Impossibility）の場面です。
We have been waiting here for him for more than an hour now.
I’m quite sure that he can’t be far away.
我々はもう一時間以上ここで彼を待っている。
間違いなく遠くにはいないと思う。
I’ve known that couple for more than twenty years.
I can’t believe they are getting a divorce.
20年以上あの夫婦を知ってます。
離婚するとはとても信じられない。
He worked hard to start a business at age sixteen.
To this day, at age 72, he still can’t stop working.
彼は16歳でビジネスを始める為一生懸命働いた。
この歳72歳でも彼はまだ働く事を辞められない。
They were both experienced mountaineers.
I can’t believe they died on the last expedition.
二人とも経験豊かな登山家たちだ。
前回の遠征で亡くなったとはとても信じられない。
He was with me just a while ago.
He can’t be missing.
彼はすこし前まで私と一緒だった。
迷っているはずがない。
The pilot made several procedural errrors.
He can’t afford to make any more mistakes.
パイロットは幾つかの手続き上のミスを犯していた。
これ以上のミスを犯す事は出来ない。
