ここでは日時、日付、期間等を表す前置詞句を見て行きます。
1. At, in, on：
At は時の一点、in は週/月/季節等の長い期間、on は曜日/日付等、の意味です。
It started to rain at sunrise.
日の出に雨が降り出した。
I met my former classmate in the summer of last year.
去年の夏に前のクラスメートに会った。
We meet on Thursdays to work on our project.
私たちはプロジェクトをする為に木曜日に会ってます。
My son was born on 25th of August 1978.
私の息子は1978年8月25日に生まれた。
His plane is scheduled to arrive at 8 o’clock tomorrow evening.
彼の飛行機は明日夜8時に到着する予定です。
The second world war started in 1939 and ended in 1945.
第二次世界大戦は1939年に始まり1945年に終わった。
2. For, during, by：
For と during は～の間、by は～まで、の意味です。
He went to college for two years before dropping out.
彼は退学前に2年間大学に通った。
We had been driving for almost four hours before the tire blew up.
我々はタイヤが爆発する前約4時間運転していた。
During the lunch break, a gentleman came looking for you.
ランチブレーク中一人のジェントルマンが貴方を探しに来てました。
He raised his hand during the townhall meeting to ask a question.
タウンホール集会中彼は質問するため手を上げた。
Homework is due by Thursday next week.
宿題は来週木曜日が提出期限です。
Please make sure that your application reaches our office by April 15, 2020.
2020年4月15日までに応募書類が我々の事務所に届くように確認願います。
3. Before, after, since：
Before は～の前、after は～の後、since はスタート時点から、の意味です。
She graduated from college before her 16th birthday.
16歳の誕生日前に彼女は大学を卒業した。
I would like to accumulate enough assets before seventy years of age.
私は70歳前までに十分な資産を蓄えたい。
After retirement, he formed a company and made lots of money.
退職後彼は会社を立ち上げかなり儲かった。
My son went to a soccer practice after school.
私の息子は学校後にサッカーの練習に行った。
He has been sleeping since he came home around 6 o’clock.
彼は6時頃家に帰った後ずっと寝ている。
She looks much happier since quitting the job.
仕事を辞めた後彼女はかなり幸せそうに見える。
4. From ～ to/till/until/, past
From ～ to/till/until/ は～から～まで、past は～後、の意味です。
His class lasts from 6 pm to/till/until 9 pm.
彼のクラスは昼の6時から7時までです。
From March to/till/until June is regarded as the spring season.
3月から6月までは春の季節だとされている。
The second world war lasted from 1939 to/till/until 1945.
第二次世界大戦は1939年から1945年まで続いた。
The child was caught watching TV past bedtime.
その子は就寝時間後にテレビを見ているのが見つかってしまった。
Our children are not allowed to stay up past 10 pm.
私たちの子供は10時後に起きている事は許されていません。
He studied past midnight to prepare for the test.
彼は夜中の12時過ぎまでテストの準備で勉強した。
