関係代名詞Whom

 

日本語は大まかな状況を説明しているだけで詳細な訳ではありません 。

関係代名詞whomは先行詞が人で目的格を表す場合につかわれますがぎこちなく聞こえる為違った言い方をする場合が多くあります。


1. Restrictive examples: Relative pronoun combines two clauses and clearly identifies the noun/pronoun/noun phrase preceding the dependent clause. The dependent clause is needed to complete the meaning of the sentence.
制限用法:関係代名詞が2つの節をつなぎ従属節が先行詞をはっきりと限定する例。従属節は文の意味を完結させるのに必要である。

The writer is very famous.
We met her last week.
The writer whom we met last week, is very famous.
先週我々が会った作家は非常に有名な方です。


The girl is my niece.
You see her talking to her friend at the door.
The girl whom you see talking to her friend at the door, is my niece.
ドアの前で友達と話している少女は私の姪っ子です。

Please recommend a man for the chairman.
You can trust him.
Please recommend a man whom you can trust for the chairman.
信頼できる男性を委員長に推薦してください。

My physics professor recently received an award.
I respect him very much.
My physics professor whom I respect very much recently received an award.
私が尊敬する物理学教授が最近賞をもらった。

The gentleman will be having lunch with us.
I would like to introduce you to him.
The gentleman whom I would like to introduce to you will be having lunch with us.
貴方に紹介したいと思っているジェントルマンと一緒にランチする事になってます。

The company representatives arrived at the hotel yesterday.
My secretary called them a week ago.
The company representatives whom my secretary called a week ago arrived at the hotel yesterday.
一週間前に私の秘書が電話した会社代表者達は昨日ホテルに到着した。


2. Non-restrictive examples: Relative clause is set off by commas and supplies extra information.  The whom clause can be taken out without altering the meaning of the sentence.
非制限用法:関係節がコンマで区切られ情報が継ぎ足される例。Whomで導かれる関係節が無くても文の本来の意味は変わらない。

The young lady, whom you met at the party, is my cousin.
若い女性 (貴方がパーティーで会った) は私の親戚です。

My neighbor boy, whom you met yesterday, is spoiled and obnoxious.
昨日貴方が会った隣の少年はわがままで不快である。

I was very happy to see George, whom I hadn’t seen for years.
ジョージ (私は彼に何年も会ってなかった) に会って非常に嬉しかった 。

My boss, whom young women like, loves to teach math.
私の上司(若い女性にもてる)は数学を教えるのが大好きです。

The woman, whom I met at the baseball game, was wearing the same color shirt as mine.
女性(野球のゲームで会った)は私と同じ色のシャツを着ていた。

The lady, whom I sit with in the front row during history class, had to go to the dentist this morning.
女性(歴史のクラスで私と一緒に前列に座る)は今朝歯科医に行かなければならなかった。
