English Sentence Structures
日本語は大まかな状況を述べているだけで詳細な訳ではありません。
通常英文の構造は単文、複文、重文、混文の４つに分けられます。それぞれの定義や例文は下記の項目で確認できます。
1. Simple sentence:
単文：従属節を含まない１つの独立節から成る文は単文と呼ばれます。しかし主語や動詞は複合主語（２つ以上の名詞がandで結ばれている）だったり複合動詞（2つ以上の動詞がand結ばれている）だったりもします。
Wild animals can be very friendly to humans.
野生の動物は人間に非常にフレンドリーたったりします。
The person standing next to the tree over there is my neighbor.
あそこの木の側に立っている方は私の隣人です。
He dropped out of college and started a company.
彼は大学を退学して会社を始めた。
She likes grapes but hates oranges.
彼女はブドウは好きだがオレンジは嫌いです。
A policeman and his partner inspected the scene of the accident.
警察官と彼のパートナーは事故現場を調査した。
She and her roommate went to their friend’s birthday party.
彼女と彼女のルームメートは友達の誕生パーティーに行った。
2. Complex Sentence:
複文：１つの独立節と１つ（あるいはそれ以上）の従属節から成る文で独立節で始まったり従属節で始まったりします。従属節は従属接続詞（after although, because, before, while, when, where, since, till, until, etc）で始まり独立節は主節とも呼ばれます。
We visited her hometown where she grew up.
我々は彼女が育った故郷を訪ねた。
We waited outside until everyone left the room.
我々は皆が部屋を出るまで外で待った。
The meeting had already been being held over half an hour when he arrived.
彼が到着した時ミーティングはすでに30分以上続いていた。
She did the laundry while her oldest daughter watched the baby.
1番年上の娘がベビーシッターしている間に彼女は洗濯した。
We had to go back home because I forgot to take the luggage with me.
私が手荷物を持ってくるのを忘れたため我々は家に戻らなければならなかった。
Although some people do not trust him, I find him to be honest and sincere in his deeds.
彼を信用しない人は何名かいるが、私は彼が正直で誠実な行いの方であると知っている。
3. Compound sentence:
重文：２つ（あるいはそれ以上）の独立節が等位接続詞（and, but, or）で結ばれ一つの文を形成する場合を重文と呼びます。
Shall we leave now, or shall we wait for them a little longer?
今行きましょうか、それとももう少し待ちましょうか。
It started to rain all the sudden, so we had to stop the basketball game.
突然雨が降り出し、バスケットボールゲームを中止しなければならなかった。
His wife went to the beach with friends, and he stayed in the hotel room watching TV.
彼の奥さんは友達とビーチに行き、彼はホテルに留まり部屋でテレビを見た。
I really need the money now, but I don’t get paid for another week.
私は今お金が必要なんだけど給料を受け取るのはあと一週間です。
He severely injured the right knee during the race, yet he continued the race to the finish line.
彼はレースの途中で右膝を怪我したにもかかわらずフィニッシュラインまでレースを続けた。
He has been learning the classical guitar over five years; you’ll be impressed with his techniques.
彼は5年以上クラシックギターを学んでいます；彼のテクニックに感動すると思います。
4. Compound-complex sentence:
混文：少なくとも2つ以上の独立節と少なくとも1つ以上の従属節を含む文は混文と呼ばれます。独立節は等位接続詞（and, but, or, so, yet…）で繋がれているのが一般的ですが等位接続詞の代わりにセミコロンだったりもします。
She raised two children while she lived with her parents, yet her parents didn’t mind helping the daughter.
彼女は両親と住んでいる間2人の子供をそだてましたが両親は娘を助けてあげることを惜しみませんでした。
He has been obese since he was a child, yet he continues to eat unhealthy foods.
彼は子供の頃から太りすぎですが今だに不健康な食べ物を食べ続けている。
You are enjoying the party, butI like to leave whenever you’re ready.
貴方はパーティーを楽しんでますが私は貴方が準備出来次第いつでも帰りたいです。
She is in bed early when she has to go to work the following day, but shestays up late on weekends.
次の日に仕事に行かなければならない時彼女は早く眠りにつきますが週末には遅くまで起きています。
My cat ran off when I tried to catch him, so I called my friend for help.
私の猫が捕まえようとしたら逃げてしまったので友達に電話して助けを求めました。
