Past Perfect Progressive Tense
日本語は大まかな状況を説明しているだけで、詳細な訳ではありません。
過去完了進行形はアクションやイベントが過去のある時点（あるいはアクションやイベント）まで続いていた状況で使います。主に次のような場面です。
1. Something (action/event/state/time) started in the past and continued until something (action/event/state/time) else.
過去に何かが始まり次の出来事まで続く過去の場面。
He had been waiting for more than half an hour when he finally left.
彼は帰るまでに30分以上待っていた。
I had been studying for two years before I got accepted to the college of my choice.
私は大学に受かるまで2年間勉強していた。
She had been cleaning the kitchen when the doorbell rang.
ドアベルが鳴る時まで彼女はキッチンを掃除していた。
Until we found a gas station, we had been driving almost all day.
ガソリンスタンドを探すまで、我々はほどんど一日中運転していた。
Before renovation started, the building had been empty all winter.
修復工事が始まるまでその建物は冬の間ずっと空き家だった。
When the phone rang, I had been playing tennis for about an hour.
電話が鳴った時、私は１時間くらいテニスをしていた。
2. Something (action/event/state/time) was happening for some time.
何かがしばらく続いていた。
The road was muddy because it had been raining for several days.
2~3日雨が降っていたので道が泥でザクザクしていた。
Her eyes were red because she had been crying for a while.
しばらく泣いていたので彼女の目は赤かった。
He had been working for the company for thirty years.
彼は30年間その会社で働いていた。
She had been sick last week.
彼女は先週病気していた。
Mike wanted to sit down because he had been standing all day at work.
マイクさんは仕事で一日中立っていたので座りたかった。
She had been complaining for several weeks because she had headaches .
彼女は数週間頭痛を訴えていた。
3. Questions: To ask questions, swap the subject with had as in the following examples.
疑問文は主語とhadを入れ替える。
Had she been crying for hours until you came home?
貴方が家に帰るまで彼女は何時間も泣いていたんですか？
Had he been standing all this time until I came back?
私が戻って来るまで彼はずっと立っていたんですか？
Had the pilot been drinking before the crash?
パイロットは墜落前に飲酒していたんですか？
Had they been waiting for two hours before we arrived?
我々が到着するまで彼らは2時間待っていたんですか？
Hadn’t it been raining here until an hour ago?
ここは１時間前まで雨が降っていたんじゃないんですか？
Hadn’t your car been running well until you took it to the repair shop?
貴方の車は修理に持っていくまでちゃんと走っていたんじゃないんですか？
