Past Perfect Tense
日本語は大まかな状況を説明しているだけで訳ではありません。
過去完了形は過去の一時点以前の出来事を表現し主に次の４つの場面で使われます。
1. Completion 1: There were 2 actions/events in the past, one occurring before the other. The earlier action/event was finished before the other.
完了１：過去に２つのアクションがあり最初のアクションは次のアクションまでに終了している。
When I arrived at the theater, all the tickets had been sold out.
私が映画館に着いた時にはチケットは完売していた。
The train had already left the station by the time I got there.
私が駅に着いた時には列車はすでに出発していた。
We couldn’t get a hotel room because we had not booked in advance.
前もって予約してなかった為私たちはホテルの部屋がとれなかった。
He was a different person as if he had lost his mind.
彼は気がおかしくなったように別人だった。
I couldn’t meet him because he had already gone home.
彼はすでに家に帰っていた為私は彼に会えなかった。
I was so tired because I had worked very hard.
私はバリバリ働いた為疲れていた。
2. Completion 2: An action/event occurred several times prior to a point in the past.
完了２：過去の1時点までに、ある出来事が数回起きていた。
The enemy had bombed that island three times before Christmas.
敵はクリスマスまでに3回その島を爆撃している。
We had had three quizzes before the semester was not even half way through.
学期が半分も終了してない前に我々はすでに3回もテストを受けていた。
He had complained several times prior to quitting the job.
彼は仕事を辞める前数回不満を述べていた。
She had seen several specialists, but no one knew why she was sick.
彼女は数回専門医を訪ねたが誰も原因を知らなかった。
The typhoon had struck the island twice before the month of June.
6月までに台風は島に2回上陸していた。
Her dog had attacked children three times until he was put to sleep.
安楽死以前に彼女の犬は3回も子供たちをアタックしていた。
3. Duration, continuation: There were 2 actions/events in the past, one occurring before the other. The first action/event continued until the second action/event.
継続：過去に2つのアクション/状況があり最初のアクション/状況が次のアクション/状況まで続く場面。
She had been very shy till about sixteen years old.
彼女は16歳ころまで恥ずかしがり屋だった。
When he woke up, he had already been in the hospital for three days.

目が覚めた時、彼はすでに3日間入院していた。
By the time Alex graduated, he had already been in London for eight years.
卒業までに彼はすでに8年間ロンドンに住んでいた。
They had owned the house for forty years before they sold it last year.
去年家を売るまで彼らは40年間所有していた。
She had had that car for ten years before it broke down.
彼女はその車が故障するまで10年間所有していた。
She had lived in New York for five years before she went back to Osaka.
大阪に帰るまで5年間彼女はニューヨークに住んでいた。
4. Experience: We are still talking about 2 actions/events, one occurring before the other. The earlier action/event is the experience.
経験：過去のある出来事までの経験。
He had not seen dolphins untill he went to the aquarium.
彼は水族館に行くまでイルカを見た事がなかった。
My parents had not been abroad until last spring.
私の両親は去年の春まで国外に出た事がなかった。
She had not flown in an airplane before she came to Japan.
彼女は日本に来るまで飛行機の乗った事がなかった。
My father had never ridden a roller coaster before he came to visit us.
私たちに会いに来るまで父はローラーコースターに乗った事がなかった。
Kristine had never been to the opera before last night.
昨夜までクリスティーンさんはオペラを見に行った事はなかった。
She had never eaten soba before coming to Okinawa.
沖縄に来るまで彼女はそばを食べたことはなかった。
