Sequence of Tenses Part I
日本語は大まかな状況を説明しているだけで詳細な訳ではありません 。
このセクションでは主節が過去の場合の時制の一致見ていきます。主節動詞の時間を基準点として従属節動詞の時間がそれと同じ時間帯なのか、あるいはその以前なのかによって2つの場面に分ける事ができます。又、別の場面ではアクションや状態がその過去の基準点まで継続していた事なのか、あるいはその基準点から見た未来の事なのかによってさらに２つのケースに分ける事ができますので全部で4つの場面を見て行きます。
1. To show a concurrent/same-time action/state as the main clause, use past tense.
従属節が主節と同じ時間帯を表す。つまり主節が過去なのでそれに合わせて従属節も過去にするのです。
I knew (that) he lived in Boston.
彼がボストンに住んでいる事を私は知っていた。
I told him (that) I had a good idea.
良いアイデアがあると私は彼に言った。
I explained to him why I was there.
私がなぜそこに居るのかを彼に説明した。
You knew (that) she was drunk.
彼女が酔っている事を貴方は知っていた。
They didn’t know (that) she was married.
彼女が結婚している事を彼らは知らなかった。
She thought she could handle it by herself.
彼女は一人でできると思っていた。
2. To show a prior action/state, use past perfect tense
主節が過去なのでそれより以前の時間帯を表す従属節は過去完了形で言う。
I knew (that) he had lived in Boston.
彼がボストンに住んでいた事を私は知っていた。
I realized (that) he had lied to me.
私は彼が私に嘘をついていた事に気づいた。
He arrived at 5:00 pm but the storeowner had already closed the store.
彼は5時に着いたが店のオーナーはすでに店を閉めてあった。
My car was dirty because I hadn’t washed it for months.
数か月間洗ってなかったので私の車は汚かった。
I wanted to see Jim at the party, but he had already gone home.
パーティーでジムに会いたかったけど、彼はすでに家に帰っていた。
I didn’t drive home because I had drunk too much beer.
私はビールを飲み過ぎていたので運転しては帰らなかった。
3. To show a future action viewed from a point in the past, use would.
主節から見た未来はwouldで表す。つまり過去の1時点から見た未来なのでwillがwouldになるわけです。
I knew (that) he would live in Boston.
私は彼がボストンに住むと知っていた。
I believed the plan would work.
私は計画はうまくいくと信じていた。
Chris said that he would help us move next week.
クリスさんは来週我々の引っ越しを手伝うと言った。
I was pretty sure it would rain that day.
私はその日に雨が降ると確信していた。
He was very sure (that) Susan would marry him.
彼はスーザンが自分と結婚すると確信していた。
I was worried (that) he would not show up on time.
彼が時間どうり来ないだろうと私は心配していた。
4. To show a continuing action/situation prior to a given point in the past, use past perfect continuous.
過去の一時点まで継続していたアクションや状況は過去完了進行形をで表す。
I knew (that) the police had been looking for him.
警察が彼を探し続けていたのを私は知っていた。
My friend was tired because he had been jogging for more than two hours.
2時間以上もジョギングしていたので私の友達は疲れていた。
She gained weight because she had been overeating.
ずっと食べ過ぎていた為彼女は太った。
The fire continued even though firefighters had been battling it for days.
消防士達は数日間苦戦していたが火は止まらなかった。
She felt fine although she had been driving for almost five hours.
約5時間も運転していたにもかかわらず彼女はあまり疲れてなかった。
He was home watching TV while the worried mother had been looking for him for hours.
心配した母が探している間彼は家でテレビをみていた。
