関係代名詞 Whose

関係代名詞whoseは先行詞が人で所有格を表す場合に使われますが人以外の場合でも使われたりします。


1. Restrictive examples: Relative pronoun combines two clauses and clearly identifies the noun/pronoun/noun phrase preceding the dependent clause. The dependent clause is needed to complete the meaning of the sentence.
制限用法:関係代名詞が2つの節をつなぎ従属節が先行詞をはっきりと限定する例。従属節は文の意味を完結させるのに必要である。

This is the man.
You spoke to his son yesterday.
This is the man whose son you spoke to yesterday.
貴方が昨日話した方はこの男性の息子です。

The doctor will be on TV tonight.
His show is both educational and entertaining.
The doctor whose show is both educational and entertaining will be on TV tonight.
今夜、娯楽でもあり教育的でもある医師のテレビ番組があります。

The person is coming to see me tonight.
You bought his car last week.
The person whose car you bought last week is coming to see me tonight.
貴方が先週、その人の車を買った方が今夜私に会いに来ます。

I think the lady teaches at Urasoe High School.
My daughter sometimes babysits her son.
I think the lady whose son my daughter sometimes babysits for, teaches at Urasoe High School.
娘が時々ベビーシッターする男の子の母親は浦添高校で教えていると思う。

The company representatives should be here anytime.
My secretary has prepared their conference room.
The company representatives whose conference room my secretary has prepared, should be here anytime.
私の秘書が用意した会議室の会社代表者たちがもうすぐここに到着すると思う。

The tourists from China are arriving at Narita tonight at 8pm.
You are supposed to bring the list of their names with you.
The tourists from China whose list of names you are supposed to bring with you, are arriving at Narita tonight at 8pm.
貴方が持ってくる事になっている中国旅行者リストの方々は今夜8時に成田に到着する事になっている。


2. Non-restrictive examples: Relative clause is set off by commas and supplies extra information.  The whose clause can be taken out without altering the meaning of the sentence.
非制限用法:関係節がコンマで区切られ情報が継ぎ足される例。Whoseで導かれる関係節が無くても文の本来の意味は変わらない。

My physics professor, whose daughter my friend is married to, has won the Teacher of the Year Award.
私の物理学教授(友達が彼の娘と結婚してます)が毎年恒例の優良賞をもらった。

My friend Joe, whose father is a commercial pilot, graduated from a college in California.
友達のジョー(彼の父はコマーシャルパイロットである)はカリフォルニアの大学を卒業した。

Tony’s car, whose rusty spots make it unique, cost him only one hundred thousand yen.
トニーの車(チラホラ錆ついていてユニーク)は10万しかしなかった。

The children, whose favorite food is ice cream, love cats.
子供たち(大好きな食べ物はアイスクリームです)は猫が大好きです。

Masao’s cats, whose white and black spots look unusual, love to play with erasers.
マサオの猫達(普通でない白黒の斑点がある)は消しゴムで遊ぶのが大好きです。

The conference participants, whose lunch will be catered by a local restaurant, come from all over the country.
会議の参加者達(彼らのランチはローカルレストランが賄います)は国内あっちこっちから来てます。
